15-man Pak squad for WI Tests named

Lahore, May 3: Middle-order batsman, Younus Khan and fast bowler, Umar Gul have been named in the15-member Test squad for two matches against West Indies. Both were rested for the ongoing five-match one-day international series against West Indies following Pakistan's loss in the World Cup semifinals to India.

According to Daily Times, the team will be led by Misbahul Haq who has already proved his captaincy in the Test matches after the spot-fixing scandal. The only surprise was the exclusion of Adnan Akmal, who has been the Test wicketkeeper in charge after his elder brother Kamran Akmal lost his place in spot-fixing scandal.

The series beginning on May 12 , has its first match scheduled at Guyana and the second match at St. Kitts. The Test series against Windies is Pakistan's best chance to win their first-ever Test series in the Caribbean, against a weak West Indies side.

Squad: Misbahul Haq (captain), Younus Khan, Taufiq Umar, Mohammad Hafeez, Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali, Mohammad Salman, Saeed Ajmal, Abdur Rehman, Umar Akmal, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz, Tanvir Ahmed, Junaid Khan and Hammad Azam.

Andy Flower will stay on as the England cricket team director after he extended his contract, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Tuesday. "Flower will remain on a permanent contract and is currently preparing for an international summer that sees England face Sri Lanka, India and Ireland."
The 43-year-old former Zimbabwe captain, who took over from Peter Moores in January 2009, has guided England to two Ashes series victories and World Twenty20 title in 2010.
The managing director of England Cricket, Hugh Morris said that he was confident the team will continue to progress under Flower.
Yardy returns More than a month after quitting the the England team midway through the World Cup due to depression, all-rounder Michael Yardy returned to competitive cricket for his county side Sussex.

"I now intend to spend some time concentrating on my cricket and would ask that people respect my decision to focus on my performances for Sussex and continue to give me the space I need," he said.
Windies beat PakPakistan's Mohammad Hafeez made a century but West Indies restored some of their battered pride with a rain-affected win in the fourth ODI in Barbados on Monday.
Dwayne Bravo struck a six in the final over before a downpour finished off the game, giving Darren Sammy's team victory by one run through the Duckworth-Lewis scoring method.
Pakistan lead the five-match series 3-1. It is the first time West Indies have beaten a test side, other than Bangladesh, in an ODI since June 2009.

Ganguly won't play against Mumbai: Yuvraj

Mumbai: Pune Warriors skipper Yuvraj Singh on Tuesday welcomed Sourav Ganguly's inclusion to the squad, saying the former India skipper's experience will be an asset to the team, but ruled him out for an IPL-4 debut against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday.
"He's experienced and I will get help in captaining the team," Yuvraj told reporters here on Tuesday, the eve of their match against Mumbai Indians.

"Definitely he will bring in some experience," he added.
Ganguly, who was on Tuesday picked as Ashish Nehra's replacement following an injury to the left-arm seamer, has however, been ruled out of Wednesday's tie.
The southpaw from Bengal had backed Yuvraj to the hilt as India skipper and for the Punjab lad, it's payback time now.
"I share a very good rapport with Sourav. He was a big support for me when I started playing cricket, so I thought (I) stand to play the role vice versa. Guys like Laxman and Dravid are still playing good cricket and so I thought he too deserves a chance," Yuvraj said.
While Yuvraj is happy with Ganguly's addition, questions remain over his fitness.
"We have to see first if he is fit to play. He has not played for a long while. He has not played much cricket, so he needs to come in and show his fitness test. If he's fit, we will definitely pick him," said Yuvraj.
Picking a batsman for an injured bowler does sound a bit surprising but Yuvraj said Ganguly was picked as they needed experience in batting.
"We always looked for an option, the best option. It was the franchisee's idea because we were waiting for Ashish's (Nehra) recovery. He cannot be fit till the IPL finishes.
"Looking at the batting, we thought we needed someone with experience; that's why we got Sourav. But he would not play tomorrow. He's not in the running," said Yuvraj, who made his international debut under Ganguly.
"(Our) concern was what was the best option for Ashish Nehra. We have a lot of bowlers but we needed someone experienced in the batting line-up who is an also Indian and who will not hamper a foreigner playing. That's why we went for Sourav," he elaborated.
Ganguly went unsold in the players' auctions held in January, after he raised his base price from USD 200,000 to 400,000.
Yuvraj is also hoping to see Graeme Smith on the field at the earliest.
"Hopefully, once Greame also becomes fit, our team will become stronger. Smith is good; he's much better now. We will assess his fitness tomorrow," the Pune skipper said.
After starting their maiden season with back-to-back wins, Pune suffered six straight losses to slip to the bottom of the table but Yuvraj felt a win against the table-toppers will be a huge morale booster.
"At the moment, it's very tough for us. Six losses can kill a lot of confidence. We've got a big game tomorrow. MI is playing really well. If we can win the game, it will give us a lot of confidence and help us in the coming games. We got a very good team. We just need one win somehow and we will get our momentum back," he said.
Asked if it was the ideal time to take on Mumbai at their den, Yuvraj said, "It goes both ways. The worst is you are playing the best team in the tournament and the best thing is if you beat the best team in the tournament, you can beat a lot of other teams."
According to Yuvraj, the Warriors should have won at least three out of their last six games.
"Last six games - three of those we should have won. The game against Chennai in Chennai, the Delhi game and the game against Jaipur. We dropped three catches of three main players. That's why we lost the game," he said.
He was clearly miffed at the suggestion that his performance in the tournament has been less than what was expected of him.
"My performance - I am the highest run-getter. I played two match-winning knocks. As a batsman, I got to do a job; if the bowlers can't do their job, I can't do much," he said.
Yuvraj said the team did not want a repeat of the sorry display against MI in their earlier clash at the Wankhede Stadium.
"We lost four early wickets in the first four overs. That's something we don't want to do again. I thought we bowled well in that game," he said.
He was of the opinion that leg spinner Rahul Sharma will be a good one-day prospect if he can improve his batting and fielding.
"He's been bowling well. Every time I give him the ball, he gets me a wicket. He's been very confident about his bowling. I have been seeing him since domestic cricket and he's worked hard on his game. If he works hard on his fielding and batting, he can be looked at in future as a limited-overs prospect," Yuvraj said.
Even though it's their home game, Yurvaj was not certain which team would get more support on Tuesday.
"Crowd is going to be 50-50. A lot of Mumbaikars are going to be coming and a few people from Pune. We will have to see who gets support."

Rested and ready, James Anderson is aiming for the top of the world

After a frustrating World Cup, the pace bowler has his and England's sights set on the No1 spot

James Anderson of Lancashire celebrates taking the wicket of Jonathan Trott of Warwickshire

On Wednesday morning at Edgbaston, toss permitting, James Anderson hopes to curl his fingers around a new, red cricket ball for the first time in four months, and begin the next phase in his bid to ascend to the top of the ICC Test world bowling rankings.
When Anderson last played a first-class match, he – and England – were on top of the world. Just before midday on 7 January in Sydney, he took the penultimate wicket of the Ashes triumph, his 24th of the series. All that with Kookaburra balls, the ones with which Anderson was widely tipped to struggle.
It clearly rankles that the achievement was ever so slightly tarnished by the scheduling that condemned an exhausted Anderson to a World Cup pasting with white balls on the subcontinent in the months that followed.
But now he has had a proper break at home in Cheshire to confront the sleep-deprived reality of being a father of two, and is relishing the prospect of contributing to Lancashire's early season momentum with a couple of appearances in the County Championship before the opportunity to take revenge against the batsmen of Sri Lanka and India in the more helpful conditions of an English summer.
"I can't wait," he says on the way to Westhoughton, a smart new ground between Bolton and Wigan, where Anderson spent the morning of the royal wedding practising with Lancashire's second team. "That wasn't me at the World Cup. It was just a very frustrating time for me. I didn't feel I was in a position to play to the standard I'm capable of. My body just didn't feel right.
"Talking to the physios and the coaches that's not surprising – they reckoned that when you include practice sessions and warm-up matches and everything else, I bowled about 500 overs out in Australia – that's the most I've ever bowled over that period of time. As the Ashes was going along I didn't really feel any effects, but afterwards there was probably bound to be a bit of a comedown. I felt mentally refreshed [having been given a 10-day break at home with his wife and their new baby after the Ashes] but my body just hadn't recovered.
"But I don't want to read too much into it. I'm pretty sure it was down to fatigue. It's felt OK again since I've started bowling again with Lancashire. I had about four weeks off in all, maybe even five. I didn't even do any sponsor things or media or anything, just a complete break, and spent plenty of time with the family, and the new routine."
Anderson shares the determination of Alastair Cook that no England team should be asked to endure such a winter again – although he falls short of the warning of future strike action that has been attributed to Cook.
"It's not just the players, I saw Geoff Miller [the national selector] saying the same thing the other day," he says. "It definitely needs to be looked at. We're the only country playing through the northern hemisphere summer, which means in a winter like the one we've just had, we're the only team playing all year round. It can have a real effect on people's careers with injuries and fatigue. I know for certain that if the ICC don't look at the scheduling then the ECB will have to look at a rotation policy, and I don't think anyone really wants that because you want teams picking their best players."
It seems a shame to ask Anderson first about his recent trials when he has not really had chance to dwell publicly on his triumphant first half of the winter. "People do still come up and say well done, even after what happened in the World Cup," he says. "It has taken a bit of the gloss off; I won't lie to you. But it's not completely washed it from people's memories, hopefully, because it's certainly the best tour and series I've been involved with.
"To take 24 wickets in such a big series; I'll struggle to beat that. But there isn't really one single wicket or performance or match that stands out above all the others – the thing that will stick with me forever is being part of the team that played out there and will always have the memories of an unbelievable tour. Right from the first day we got there, to sitting on the outfield at Sydney when it had finished, having a beer – I'll never forget that feeling."
How hard will it be to replicate that team spirit, and intensity, in a home series against a below-strength Sri Lanka? "We want to be the No1 Test country in the world, and I want to be the No1 bowler in the world," he says – both Anderson and England are currently ranked third, in his case behind Graeme Swann and Dale Steyn. "To do that you've got to be on top of your game for a sustained period of time."

Pollock against more foreign stars in IPL

Mumbai, May 1: Unlike Kings XI Punjab coach Tom Moody, Mumbai Indians' mentor Shaun Pollock is not in favour of having five foreigners in the Indian Premier League, saying the tournament was meant for giving opportunities to local talents.

"Why would you want to change that. At the end of the day when you went to the auction, you chose your players based on the fact that you will need only four players. It wouldn''t make sense to change it now," the former South Africa pacer told reporters here today.

"The idea of the IPL was to discover some local Indian talent. The more opportunities they get the better for them," he added.

In a newspaper column, Moody had stated that since the number of franchises in the IPL had been increased to 10, it was time to increase the number of foreigners per side from four to five to bridge the gap in the skill of different players.

Commenting on the appointment of Duncan Fletcher as the coach of the Indian team, Pollock said the key for him to be successful would all depend on whether he is able to strike a chord with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

"I have never played under Duncan, never played in a team under him, never been coached by him, so it would be unfair for me to comment on what type of coach he is. I suppose because of all his experience, he''s been with a couple of teams, a couple at the international level as well. He''s got a lot of experience.

"It all depends on how he works with Indian skipper M S Dhoni and what sort of rapport he has with (Indian) players.

I''m sure he will give Gary a call and if Eric Simmons is involved they will come up with a plan. I would expect him to be pretty good."

Pollock hoped his team, which plays three matches in the next seven days - two in Mumbai and one in Navi Mumbai - will ensure it wins all the games to book a spot in the play-offs.

"We would love to work it that way. That''s ideally how I wanted. But we are taking it one game at a time. In this tournament we can''t think too far ahead. We have to come back to Mumbai. We are looking forward to tomorrow''s game," he said ahead of his team''s clash with Kings XI Punjab at the Wankhede stadium here tomorrow.

Mumbai Indians have registered five victories from seven games so far. Pollock felt that though Punjab have strong batting, his team could put them under pressure by taking early wickets.

"They have got some depth as well. Ideally, if we get some early wickets we can put them under pressure," he added.
